Tell Walker You Expect Leadership

Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex

There is no doubt that the Milwaukee County Mental Health facility is dangerous for patients and workers. But instead of fixing the problem, what did Scott Walker do?

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "a private lawyer has been paid $395 an hour to represent the county and a public relations staffer has been hired at $49,200 a year." Total costs to taxpayers? "$700,000 in extra patient costs and legal fees in the past year, a figure that may easily top $1 million." And that's just one case.

Walker says "the buck stops with me," but last year, when the issue wasn't on the front page of the newspaper and County Board members pushed for real solutions, Walker refused to take action.

Walker was AWOL right up until last Friday when a majority of Milwaukee County Board Supervisors renewed their call for a new, safe facility. Just hours later, Scott Walker released a statement saying he was going along with the majority and endorsed the plan for a new facility.

Refusing to tackle the tough problems until a veto-proof majority of the County Board and unending media attention forces action isn't leadership!

Fighting for Our Families and Our Lives

Paid Sick Days and Healthy Families Act

After 90 years women are still fighting for their rights, including:
•The right to take care of a sick child or family member.
•The right to take a personal sick day without retribution.
•The right of victims of sexual assault to take a paid safe day.

August 26th, is a national day of action in support of the Healthy Families Act, a bill in Congress that would guarantee the right to paid sick days for every American worker.

In 2008 Milwaukee voters overwhelmingly approved a Paid Sick Days referendum which, according to Wisconsin law, should have functioned as "direct legislation," which means it was the express will of the voters, and by direct democracy shall be implemented. The business lobby has so far been able to block implementation of the law.

Paid Sick Days has taken off as a national movement and already a federal bill has been introduced.

Wisconsin is poised to extend its reputation as a forward thinking state by becoming the first to enact paid sick days legislation.

Deadline for action: 11/2/2010.
